I'm working on adding live classes to this site supplimented with additional activities. Please let me know if you are interested. As this is gearing up to holiday season, I may not open up any live courses until January unless I have a demand for it. Live courses will probably take 6-8 weeks, on a once a week schedule.

I have a lot of craft-based class up and available. If you want different classes or different topics, just let me know and I'll see if I can't come up with something!

 

Available courses

• Craft of Fiction

  Sessions will include discussions, in-class assignments, examples, and “homework” exercises designed to develop various elements of the craft. At the end of the course, each participant will have a complete original piece of short fiction. This is a complete course that covers all the shorter modules in a comprehensive class.
  
  This is a writing-intensive course. You will write between 10k and 15k words in the duration.
  
  Once enrolled, you have 120 days to complete the course in an online format. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work. 

  This opportunity is $299.

  

• Characterization

  This class covers the basic elements of characterization. In this class you will learn about the direct and indirect methods of characterization, have an opportunity to write two characters, and place them into a story together. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, two lessons, a characterization sheet exercise, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and exercise and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

  This class module is $55.

  

• Point of View

  This class covers the basic elements of point of view. In addition, this class covers narrative distance, POV shifts, and tense. Point of view is the lens through which the reader envisions the story. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

  This class module is $29.

  

• Showing and Telling

  This class covers the basic elements of showing and telling. In addition, this class covers active and passive voices, emotion in story, and filtering. These elements merge together to create a specific environment for the reader, drawing them into your story. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

  This class module is $29.

  

• Story and Plot

  This class covers the basic elements of story and plot. In this class you will learn how to plot, what story means, and about different methods of viewing "conflict". Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Writing a Novel in 30 Days

  This class covers the basics of light planning for writing a novel in 30 days. In this class you will learn techniques for writing loose plans including brief character sketches, simple plot points, useful lists, and what is at stake. You will also learn tips of overcoming writer's block. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, a lesson, and a homework assignment. I will add ideas and help focus your thoughts so you can successfully write a novel in a month.

  This class module is $29.

  

• Revision

  This class covers the basic elements of revision. The goal is to learn new methods of revision and be able to work through your story in new ways. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned (upload an original story and then the revision). I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

  This class module is $39.

  

• Comparisons and Symbolism

  This class covers the basic elements of comparison, what each is and how it can be used. In addition, this class covers symbolism and failed comparisons. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Images and Details

  This class covers the basic elements images and details. Here you will imagine with the five sense and creat details that draw readers into your written world. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Setting and Mood

  This class covers the basic elements of setting. In this class you will learn about setting, mood, and atmosphere, and how setting influences story (and in some cases defines it). In addition the technique of defamiliarization is introduced. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Audience

  This class covers the element of audience: to whom the story is being told. The goal of this class is to introduce methods of storytelling. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Scene and Summary

  This class covers the basic elements of scene and summary. The goal is to know when you are writing scene and when you are writing summary. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.

• Mechanics and Rhythm

  This class covers the basic elements of mechanics and prose rhythm. In this class, you will learn about uses of punctuation for story, and how syntax and sentence rhythm affect story. Once enrolled, you have 30 days to complete the class in an online format. There is a free-writing exercise, the lesson, and a short story exercise to apply what you have learned. I read through each story and make comments explaining why something works or doesn't work.
